And even though, going out to practice, I see mistakes being made by the most seasoned gun enthusiasts, creating an unsafe environment for all. So, as my grandma used to say, repetition makes perfect. Let's repeat these 10 simple rules for gun safety.
Top 10 Gun Safety Rules:
1. Always keep your gun pointed in a safe direction: A safe direction means that the gun is pointed away from any people, pets, or anything that you do not want to hit. Always make sure that the gun is pointed in a direction that will not cause harm to yourself or others.
2. Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot: Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot. This will help prevent accidental discharge of the firearm. Make sure to keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you have decided to shoot.
3. Treat every gun as if it is loaded: Even if you know the gun is unloaded, treat it as if it is loaded at all times. This means keeping the gun pointed in a safe direction, keeping your finger off the trigger, and not relying on the gun's safety to prevent discharge.
4. Always wear proper eye and ear protection: Shooting can be loud and there is a risk of debris or fragments hitting your eyes or face. Always wear proper eye and ear protection to prevent injury.
5. Know your target and what is beyond: Before shooting, be aware of your surroundings and what is beyond your target. Make sure you know what is in front of, behind, and beside your target. Be aware of any possible ricochets or bullet penetration through barriers.
6. Store firearms properly: Firearms should always be stored unloaded in a secure location, such as a gun safe or lock box. Keep the firearm out of reach of children or any unauthorized individuals.
7. Be sure the gun is safe to operate: Always check your gun before use to ensure it is in good working order. Make sure the firearm is clean, lubricated, and free of any debris. Check that the magazine is inserted correctly and the safety is engaged.
8. Use the right ammunition: Using the correct ammunition for your firearm is important for safe operation. Use only ammunition that is recommended by the firearm manufacturer. Yes, this is yet the easiest mistake to make, so please make sure you using the correct caliber ammo!
9. Learn how to properly hold and control the gun: It is important to learn the proper technique for holding and controlling a firearm. Always keep a firm grip on the firearm and ensure your fingers and hands are not in the way of the slide or action.
