What is the advantage of an 18-inch AR-15 upper compared with a 16-inch upper?

An 18-inch AR-15 upper provides two additional inches of barrel length compared with a 16-inch configuration, which can provide additional velocity depending on the ammunition. The longer format is commonly selected for target and precision-oriented configurations while remaining shorter than traditional 20-inch AR-15 setups.
