Why is a 16-inch barrel so popular for 5.56 AR-15 rifle kits?

A 16-inch barrel is popular because it provides a practical balance of overall size and ballistic performance while meeting the federal minimum rifle barrel length without requiring a permanently attached muzzle device solely to reach 16 inches. Exact performance varies by ammunition, barrel and configuration.
