What is the advantage of an 18", 20" or 24" barrel on a 5.56/.223 AR-15?

Longer AR-15 barrels can provide additional velocity and a longer sighting platform compared with shorter configurations. An 18" barrel offers a balance of length and handling, while 20" and 24" barrels are often selected for target, varmint and precision-oriented rifles. Actual velocity and performance depend on the chamber, ammunition and barrel specifications.
