These shorter .308 uppers provide a more compact profile than traditional longer-barreled AR-10 configurations. What is the difference between a 14.5-inch and 16-inch .308 AR-10 upper?

A 14.5-inch .308 upper provides a shorter, more compact configuration than a 16-inch upper, while the 16-inch .308 barrel generally provides additional velocity and avoids the federal minimum rifle-barrel issue associated with an unmodified 14.5-inch barrel. A 14.5-inch barrel used on a rifle generally requires an appropriate permanently attached muzzle device that brings the legal barrel length to at least 16 inches, unless the firearm is otherwise lawfully configured under applicable NFA requirements.
